Set Apart for Service

Acts 13:1-5

One Quality of a Servant in the Lord’s Kingdom is Sincerity.

Sincere servants are Interested in the Work of the Lord’s Kingdom.

~ II Corinthians 11:28              Apart from such external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all the churches.

Sincere servants are Involved in the Work of the Lord’s Kingdom.

~ I Corinthians 15:58               Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.

A Second Quality of a Servant in the Lord’s Kingdom is Spirit-led.

Spirit-led servants Listen to the Holy Spirit.

~ Romans 8:5-7           For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so,

Spirit-led servants Submit to the Holy Spirit.

~ James 4:17              Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

A Third Quality of a Servant in the Lord’s Kingdom is Service.

Serve in the area of Giftedness!

~ I Peter 4:10              As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

Serve Willingly!

~ Colossians 3:23-24  Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.

Serve Enthusiastically!

~ Romans 1:16            For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Sermon Outline, October 20, 2019, “Unpacking for Heaven”

Unpacking for Heaven

1 Timothy 6:17–19

To store up, you pour out.

 Matthew 10:38–42, Proverbs 19:17, Matthew 25:31-46, Luke 12:13-21, Matthew 19:16-21, Luke 12:22-34, Mark 6:30-44, Acts 2:45, Acts 20:35, Acts 10:4, Hebrews 6:10, Exodus 36:6-7, I Kings 17:7-16, Proverbs 28:27, Deuteronomy 24:19, Proverbs 22:9, Proverbs 11:25, Luke 6:38, II Corinthians 9:6–7, and Psalm 82:3

Every one of these—and hundreds of other passages—teach the same principle: to store up, you pour out.

Why pour out?

1 Timothy 6:17 (NIV) Command

1 Timothy 6:17 (NIV) Command those who are rich in this present world….

1 Timothy 6:17–18 (NIV) Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.

1 Timothy 6:19 (NIV) In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

The only way to store up for what is truly life is to pour out.

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. ~ Romans 8:18

Sermon Outline, October 13, 2019, “Packing for Heaven”

Packing for Heaven

Matthew 6:19-21 and 1 Corinthians 33:11-15

You can take it with you.

Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.  Revelation 22:12 (NIV)

Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19–21 (CSB)

All physical possessions are vulnerable to loss.

Be careful about what you take with you.

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames. 1 Corinthians 3:11–15 (NIV)

Foundation

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is…  1 Corinthians 3:11–13 (NIV)

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 (NIV)

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Jn 14:6

Framework

But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss….  1 Corinthians 3:13–15 (NLT)

Fire

Saved by grace, rewarded by deed

Your heavenly offering to God is determined by your earthly deeds.
