Sermon Outline, I Peter 5:1-7, “Humble People”

Humble People

I Peter 5:1-7

~ James 4:10   Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.


God’s People demonstrate Humility with Responsibility.

Pride makes excuses for irresponsibility.

~ Proverbs 16:18         Pride goes before destruction,
And a haughty spirit before stumbling.


Humility fulfills Responsibility.

~ Acts 20:28                Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.


~ Hebrews 13:17         Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.



God’s People demonstrate Humility with Attitude.

Pride looks down on people.

~ Matthew 20:16         So the last shall be first, and the first last.”


Humility gives preference to others.

~ Romans 12:10          Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor;


~ Romans 12:16          Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation.


~ Philippians 2:3          Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;



God’s People demonstrate Humility with Worry.

Pride causes us to fret about our worries.

~ Hebrews 11:6           And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.


Humility trusts God with Worry.

~ Psalm 55:22             Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you;
He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.


~ Philippians 4:6-7       Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.


~ I John 5:14-15          This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.


~ Romans 8:32            He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?


~ Romans 8:28             And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.


~ Romans 8:38-39        For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.


~ Proverbs 3:5-6         Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.


~ Deuteronomy 7:9      Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments;

Sermon Outline, September 22, 2019, “Persecuted People”

Persecuted People

I Peter 4


~ John 15:20                Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also.


~ Acts 14:22                strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, “Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.”


~ II Timothy 3:12        Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.


Glorify God with Focus!

Be like Christ!

~ I Peter 2:24               and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.


~ Isaiah 53:5               But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.


Stop Sinning.

~ I Peter 3:21              Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,


~ Acts 2:38                  Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.



Glorify God with Love!

Pray for One Another!

~ James 5:16                           Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.


Love One Another Earnestly!

~ I Corinthians 13:5    does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,


Serve One Another!

~ James 1:12               Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.



Glorify God with Joy!

Joy seems like an unusual response to Persecution!

~ Philippians 4:4         Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!


Rejoice in Persecution!

~ Romans 8:18            For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

Righteous People

I Peter 3:8-22

~ Matthew 5:8              “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.


God’s People treat Others Rightly!

Treat one another with Love.

~ Romans 12:10           Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor;


Treat your enemies with Love.

~ Matthew 5:38-45                  “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. 41 Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.


~Romans 12:17, 19-21            17 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men.

19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.



God’s People represent Christ Rightly!

Defend Christ Personally!

~ Matthew 6:24            “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.


Defend Christ Strongly!

God’s People proclaim the Gospel Rightly!

Proclaim the Gospel Truthfully!

~ I Corinthians 15:3-4             For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,


Proclaim the Gospel Personally!

~ Mark 16:16               He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.


~ Acts 2:38                  Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.


~ Acts 22:16                Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’

The Approaching Harvest

Matthew 9:35-38


Jesus had an awareness of the conditions.


~ Matthew 9:36a         When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless,


Jesus made an analysis of the conditions.


~ Matthew 9:36b         like sheep without a shepherd.


~ Matthew 9: 37a        “The harvest is plentiful


~ John 4:35                  Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.


Jesus gives the answer to the condition.


Matthew 9:38              Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
