John – The Lessons I Learned from Jesus

John 20 – Acts 2

When did you know and believe that Jesus is Lord? (What’s your story?)

When have you nearly given up and Jesus challenged you to try a different way?

When have you been reminded that God didn’t need you, but He chose to allow you to be part of His story in a really big way?

When is a time you messed up, wore out, or stepped out of the Church’s mission, but God restored you to spread His message of hope and love?

What is the purpose of the church and how is your church a part of that purpose?

Sermon Outline, April 21, 2019, “The Day of Surprises”

The Day of Surprises

John 20:19-31

Examine the Surprise!

Truth makes a surprise wonderful!

~ Proverbs 13:12                     Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
But desire fulfilled is a tree of life.

True Facts verify the Resurrection Surprise!

~ Romans 6:3-4                       Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

~ I Corinthians 11:26              For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

Embrace this Surprise!

Embrace this Truth Readily!

~ Revelation 21:8                    But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

Embrace this Truth Eagerly!

~ I Corinthians 15:3-4             For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

Evangelize this Surprise!

Proclaim this Truth in Word!

~ Romans 1:16                         For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Proclaim this Truth in Deed!

~ I Thessalonians 4:14            For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

~ Romans 6:3-4                       Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

Sermon Outline, April 14, 2019, “The Surprising Switch”

The Surprising Switch

Matthew 27:15-56

Consider the Choice!

Option One: The Law demands Justice!

~ James 2:10               For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

~ Ezekiel 18:4             Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die.

~ Romans 6:23            For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Option Two: Grace extends Forgiveness!

~ Romans 6:23            For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

~ Romans 3:24            being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;

~ Ephesians 2:8           For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

Consider Grace!

Grace takes our Place!

~ II Corinthians 5:21   He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Grace takes our Punishment!

~ Isaiah 53:7               He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not open His mouth;
Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.

Grace takes our Penalty!

~ Isaiah 53:4-6            Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,

Smitten of God, and afflicted.
But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all
To fall on Him.

Consider the Response!

Many Reject Christ!

~ II Thessalonians 1:8-9         dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,

Few Follow Christ!

~ Hebrews 10:26         For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

~ Matthew 22:14          For many are called, but few are chosen.”

~ John 10:14               I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me,

Pray to the Father.

Pray Faithfully.

~ I Thessalonians 5:17            pray without ceasing;

~ Ephesians 6:18                     With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

Pray Specifically.

~ I John 5:14-15          This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

Pray Fervently.

~ James 5:16   Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.

Trust the Father’s Will.

Faith struggles to do God’s will.

~ James 4:17   Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

Faith submits to God’s Sovereign Will.

~ Romans 8:28            And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

~ Proverbs 3:5-6         Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.

~ Job 42:2                   “I know that You can do all things,
And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.

~ James 1:12               Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Cherish the Father’s Encouragement.

Loneliness often accompanies Disappointments.

~ Matthew 27:46         About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

God encourages us with His Presence.

~ Psalm 139:7-10        Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the dawn,
If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
10 Even there Your hand will lead me,
And Your right hand will lay hold of me.

~ Matthew 28:20         teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

~ Hebrews 13:5           Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,”
