Radical Relinquishment

Jeremiah 41:17 42:22

God’s Judgment on Judah

A Fearful Remnant

Jeremiah 41:17-18              And they went and stayed at Geruth Chimham near Bethlehem, intending to go to Egypt 18 because of the Chaldeans. For they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.

A Desire to Seek the Will of God

Jeremiah 42:1-6                  Then all the commanders of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest, came near and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Let our plea for mercy come before you, and pray to the Lord your God for us, for all this remnant—because we are left with but a few, as your eyes see us— that the Lord your God may show us the way we should go, and the thing that we should do.” Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard you. Behold, I will pray to the Lord your God according to your request, and whatever the Lord answers you I will tell you. I will keep nothing back from you.” Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the Lord be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act according to all the word with which the Lord your God sends you to us. Whether it is good or bad, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we are sending you, that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.”

God Answers Those Who Seek Him

The Choice: God’s Will or My Desires

Jeremiah 43:1-4      When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all these words of the Lord their God, with which the Lord their God had sent him to them, Azariah the son of Hoshaiah and Johanan the son of Kareah and all the insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say, ‘Do not go to Egypt to live there,’ but Baruch the son of Neriah has set you against us, to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may kill us or take us into exile in Babylon.” So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Judah.

Why Don’t We Trust God?

Jeremiah 41:17-18               And they went and stayed at Geruth Chimham near Bethlehem, intending to go to Egypt 18 because of the Chaldeans. For they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.

God’s teaching so often conflicts with our desires.

God’s teaching so often counters our commonsense.

Matthew 5:43–44              “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

Matthew 18:21–22           Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Matthew 6:15                    but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

God’s teaching so often creates risk.

No man is worth his salt who is not ready at all times to risk his well-being, to risk his body, to risk his life in a great cause. Theodore Roosevelt

Sermon Outline, February 17, 2019, “Interpretation”

Interpretation

Psalm 119:34

~ II Timothy 2:15       Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

Consider the Don’ts of Bible Interpretation!

Don’t Misread the Text.

~ I Timothy 6:10          For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

~ John 10:30               I and the Father are one.

~ John 20:31                but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

~ I Timothy 6:17         Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.

~ Acts 4:12                  And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.

~ Psalm 37:4               Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.

Don’t Distort the Text!

~ II Timothy 4:3-4      For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

Don’t Contradict the Text!

~ James 2:24               You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.

~ Mark 16:16              He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.

~ Acts 2:38                   Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

~ Acts 22:16                Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.

~ I Peter 3:21              Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Don’t Ignore the Text!

~ Hebrews 6:4-6         For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

Don’t use Feelings.

~ John 8:32                 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.

Don’t use Relativism!

~ Matthew 25:41         Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;

~ Mark 9:43-44            If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than, having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, 44 [where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.]

~ Luke 16:23-24         In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’

~ Revelation 14:11       And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

Don’t be Overconfident!

~ Proverbs 16:18         Pride goes before destruction,
And a haughty spirit before stumbling.

Consider the Do’s of Bible Interpretation!

Pray for Correct Understanding!

~ Matthew 7:7             Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

~ I John 5:14-15           This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

Look for the Common Sense Meaning!

~ I John 5:13                These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Use all the Helps available!

~ Proverbs 1:5             A wise man will hear and increase in learning,
And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel,

Recognize the Particular Literary Form!

~ Proverbs 1:7             The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
Fools despise wisdom and instruction.

~ Proverbs 3:5-6         Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.

~ Proverbs 6:16-19     There are six things which the Lord hates,
Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:
17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
And hands that shed innocent blood,
18 A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that run rapidly to evil,
19 A false witness who utters lies,
And one who spreads strife among brothers.

~ Proverbs 22:6           Train up a child in the way he should go,
Even when he is old he will not depart from it.

~ Proverbs 22:15         Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child;
The rod of discipline will remove it far from him.

Use Context!

~ II Timothy 2:15       Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
