Protecting the Heart of Jesus

Luke 4:1-13

Know the Holy Spirit!

The Holy Spirit allows Temptation!

~ James 1:13-15          Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

The Holy Spirit empowers our spirits to overcome temptation.

~ Galatians 5:16           But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.

~ Romans 8:13            for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Know the Enemy!

The Enemy is Satan.

~ John 10:10   The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Satan tempts after a Spiritual High.

~ I Corinthians 10:12   Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.

Satan tempts Anywhere.

~ Matthew 26:41          Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Satan tempts our Weakness.

~ II Corinthians 12:9    And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

Satan tempts by Deception.

~ John 8:44     You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Satan tempts with Scripture.

~ II Timothy 2:15       Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

Satan tempts us to Depend on Self rather than God.

~ II Corinthians 5:7      for we walk by faith, not by sight—

Satan tempts us to Test God.

~ I Corinthians 10:9    Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents.

Satan tempts us with the Easy Way Out.

~ Matthew 24:13         But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.

Satan tempts us Constantly.

~ I Peter 5:8    Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Know the Scripture!

The Word of God sensitizes our Conscience.

~ Psalm 119:11           Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.

~ Psalm 1:2     But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.

The Word of God empowers us to Overcome Temptation!

~ Ephesians 4:25         Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.

~ Ephesians 4:29         Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

~ Philippians 2:14       Do all things without grumbling or disputing;

~ Luke 12:15   Then He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.”

~ Philippians 4:8         Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

~ I Corinthians 6:18-20           Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

~ Romans 12:17-21     Never pay back evil for evil to anyone.  Respect what is right in the sight of all men. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. 19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

~ James 1:19-20          This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.

~ Revelation 2:10        Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days.  Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,

~ I John 3:1     See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

~ Philippians 2:5-8      Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

34 “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
