The Compassionate King – Matthew 4:23-25

How often do we look at our world through “spiritual eyes”.  If you’ve ever witnessed an act of compassion on the part of a good Samaritan, or a selfless sacrifice on someone’s behalf for a total stranger, chances are your spiritual “lenses” have been swept clean of worldly blinders  and cleared for viewing things Jesus had intended us to see.  It’s no wonder that on social media (such as Facebook or Twitter), we see phrases such as “faith restored” or “there is a God” in reaction to such uplifting events.
Christ, as he conducted His Father’s business on this earth, exhibited overflowing compassion toward everyone; including: the masses he saw (Matthew 9:36), his deceased friend Lazarus (John 11:33-35), and the woman at the well (John 4).  Christ, as His Father has proven many times, wants none to perish or suffer.  His compassionate nature is one of the key hallmarks that separates being a Christ follower from any other world religion.
In Matthew 4, beginning in verse 23, we see Christ who is spiritually victorious yet drained physically from his time in the wilderness being tempted by Satan.  Instead of retreating, His love for all humans and quest to fulfill the Scriptures of bringing light to a “dark land ” (Isaiah 9:1-2) overpowered the worldly inclinations of slumber and seclusion, and decided to carry on the compassionate work for the Kingdom’s sake.
Matthew: 4-23-25 (ESV)
23 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. 24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them. 25 And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
Remember, as Romans 13:14 admonishes us to “put on (the cloak of) Christ”, let us not leave the accoutrement of compassion stowed away.  He that has ears, let him hear.

John 15:1-8

15 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.

Psalm 91:14-15

14 “Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.
15 “He will call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.

Sermon Outline, July 30, 2017, “Remove the Rock of Lust”

Remove the Rock of Lust

 Matthew 5:27-28

~ I Peter 1:15-16          but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Recognize Lust as Sin.

Society worships lust.

~ Isaiah 5:20   Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

God condemns lust.

~ I Corinthians 6:9-10              Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

~ Galatians 5:19-21     Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

~ Revelation 21:8        But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

Realize the Wreckage of Lust.

Lust wrecks the Family.

~ Hosea 8:7     For they sow the wind And they reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; It yields no grain. Should it yield, strangers would swallow it up.

Lust wrecks our Testimony for Christ.

~ II Samuel 12:14        However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die.

Lust wrecks the Person.

~ Ephesians 5:5           For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

~ Colossians 3:5-6      Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience,

Remove Lust Diligently.

Diligently enlist Self.

~ Matthew 6:22-23      “The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

~ Job 31:1       I have made a covenant with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin?

~ II Corinthians 10:5   We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,

~ Proverbs 4:23           Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.

~ Proverbs 23:7           For as he thinks within himself, so he is. He says to you, “Eat and drink!” But his heart is not with you.

~ I Corinthians 6:18-20            Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

Diligently enlist God.

~ Romans 8:13            for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

~ Psalm 24:3-5            Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood And has not sworn deceitfully. He shall receive a blessing from the Lord And righteousness from the God of his salvation.

~ Matthew 5:8             Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

~ Philippians 4:8         Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

~ I Peter 1:15-16         but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Diligently enlist Others.

~ Proverbs 24:6           For by wise guidance you will wage war, And in abundance of counselors there is victory.

Psalm 23:1-6

The Lord is my shepherd,
I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside quiet waters.
He restores my soul;
He guides me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You have anointed my head with oil;
My cup overflows.
Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Kids Serving at Sayre Christian Village

Early this year, our friends from Sayre Christian Village came to visit with our kids in Uptown to share about their ministry. They shared about what they do, how they serve, and even gave us a sample of playing Bingo together. At the end of the night we were challenged to take home Sayre Bears (little banks) to collect our spare change. The kids loved the visit, but they looked forward to the challenge of collecting extra money to help serve the wonderful people at Sayre. Each week the children returned their banks and the money added up to almost $50. Then, two weeks later we took the kids on an adventure to Sayre to visit and also paint with those living there. Our kids loved meeting the residents of the facility and helping them make amazing works of art on poster board.
As we entered the Spring session of Oasis, we talked about ways we could serve again. Together, we decided on two ways. We gave the spare change we collected to Sayre to celebrate one person’s birthday. We also began working hard to deliver a puppet show to our new friends.
Finally, the day came and our hard work was ready to be displayed at Sayre. The children worked as a team to carry all of the needed supplies to set up the puppet show. Once our sound challenges were fixed, we took over the stage. Our puppets (nearly 30 of them total) danced and sang to three upbeat songs. The audience loved it, and even requested to hear the entire program again! So we did. In fact, we were told they loved our visit so much, they recorded our performance to be played on every TV in their facility!
We truly enjoyed our time at Sayre, greatly enjoyed working with them, and look forward to visiting again on our next Truth Traveler adventure!

Hebrews 9:15

For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
