Small Groups

Here at Tates Creek we encourage every one of our members to be involved in 1 hour or worship, 1 hour of group study, and 1 hour of service every week.  That 1 hour of group study is best done in a Sunday School class or in one of our Small Groups.   Do you ever feel like you’re just not connecting at church?  Do you feel like it’s hard to get plugged in?  Do you feel like you don’t really know where you fit in this community of Christ-followers?  Committing to a Small Group for an extended period of time is a great way to help you get past those feelings.    We realize it’s hard to open your life up to people you don’t know very well.  But there are many people in our church, including myself, who can witness to the fact that when you do… when you consistently involve yourself in the same small group of believers over the course of a long period of time… those people become your closest friends and they help you to grow in your relationship with the Lord.    I can attest to this personally.  About a year after we were married, my wife and I began searching for a church.  We attended so many, but what kept us at Tates Creek long-term, more than anything else, was getting involved in a Small Group.  Church went from being the place we went on Sundays to attend worship, to becoming a tight-knit community that cared for us and needed us to care for them.  We felt like we were finally living the way God created us to live. “Bear one another’s burdens…” Galations 6:2 “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other…” James 5:16 “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” Romans 12:15   How can we expect to obey those commandments if we’re not deeply connected with some other members of our church?   In January we began two new Small Groups.  I would encourage you to visit our Small Groups page on our website to see what we have to offer.  If a Sunday School class would suit you best, there are many to choose from and committing to one of those is also an excellent way to weave yourself into community with other believers here at the church.  You can find those on our website as well.

Knowing God’s Love

I John 1:3-10

what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete. This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

The Throne of Grace ~ Ephesians 1:15-22

“For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church.”

Paul’s prayer is God’s desire for us as well “that they might know God.”  In expressing his prayer that the Ephesians might know “the exceeding greatness of His Power toward us who believe”(Ephesians 1:19), Christ is seated at the right hand of God. We draw near with confidence to the throne of grace to pray. (Hebrews 4:16)  At the throne, we receive mercy and grace. Mercy is His life given to us. We are now able to live by the life of God. Grace is God’s ability or capacity in us and through us, to do His will. The throne of grace contains the name and works of every son of God. Written in the Lamb’s book of life. Every one of us needs help. We are not God. We have needs. We have weaknesses. We have confusion. We have limitations of all kinds. We need help. And therefore at the bottom of our hearts we know that we do not deserve the help we need. And so we feel trapped. I need help to live my life and to handle death and to cope with eternity—help with my family, my spouse, my children, my loneliness, my job, my health, my finances. I need help. But I don’t deserve the help I need. Yes, we all need help. Yes, none of us deserves the help we need. But no to despair and pride and lechery. Look at what God says. Because we have a great High Priest, the throne of God is a throne of grace. And the help we get at that throne is mercy and grace to help in time of need. Grace to help! Not deserved help — gracious help.

Time for a Check-up

Going to the doctor was never one of my favorite things to do, but I was unfortunately reminded how important it is to regularly go for checkups.  Back in 2012 I was having what I thought were back spasms.  I tried to self-medicate for a long time and it never worked.  I continued to have serious health problems with no relief.  I never went to the doctor though to have them help me figure out what was going on in my body.  In March of 2012, I was on a trip with some students when something bad happened.  I was rushed to the hospital with a serious health condition.  Amy said she knew it was serious when the doctor walked in the room, turned the TV off, and asked her to sit down so he could talk to her.  I spent the next ten days in a hospital waiting for my body to recover enough so that I could have surgery.  I learned a lot through that life event and it has changed my awareness of how important it is monitor your health.     I think the same can be said in regards to church health and how important it is to be aware of our spiritual health.  Far too often, we as churches ignore the warning signs and do not come in for spiritual checkups.  Unfortunately, what happens is that you end up like me, in need of emergency surgery because the warning signs were ignored.  It seems we frequently hear about churches that lose sight of the importance of spiritual healthiness.  I am reminded of this strong warning out of Revelation 3.    “Write this letter to the angel of the church in Sardis.  This is the message from the one who has the sevenfold Spirit of God and the seven stars: “I know all the things you do, and that you have a reputation for being alive—but you are dead.  Wake up!  Strengthen what little remains, for even what is left is almost dead.  I find that your actions do not meet the requirements of my God.  Go back to what you heard and believed at first; hold to it firmly.  Repent and turn to me again.  If you don’t wake up, I will come to you suddenly, as unexpected as a thief.”  Revelation 3:1-3   I think Tommy’s series right now is a great reminder that it’s time for a checkup!

through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
