Sermon Outline, January 8, 2017, “Authentic”
Authenticity lives in the Presence of Jesus.
Jesus is aware of our condition as a Church.
~ Hebrews 4:13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Jesus is aware of our condition as a Person.
~ II Chronicles 16:9 For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars.
~ Luke 8:17 For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.
Authenticity pursues honesty about Sin.
Authenticity is honest about God’s Attitude toward sin.
~ Psalm 45:7 . . . you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions . . .
~ Proverbs 6:16-18 There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil,
Authenticity is honest about God’s Judgment toward sin.
~ Hebrews 10:26-29 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?
~ Galatians 5:4 You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.
~ Hebrews 2:1-3 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard . . .
Authenticity strives to Repent.
Repentance calls us to Remember.
~ I Corinthians 11:24-25, 28 . . . and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
Repentance calls us to Do Differently.
~ Luke 13:3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
