Sermon Outline, October 2, 2016, “The Cure for the ‘I’ Trouble”

                                                     The Cure for “I” Trouble

Philippians 2:1-16

Humility demonstrates Selflessness.

Selflessness thinks of others first.

~ II Timothy 3:1-2      But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy . . .

~ Romans 12:10, 16    10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor . . .      16 Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation.

Selflessness puts others first.

~ Luke 22:42   . . . saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”

~ Romans 8:32             He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?

~ I Corinthians 13:5    . . . does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered . . .

Humility demonstrates Submission.

The Motive for Humble Obedience is Love.

~ Romans 5:8   But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

~ I John 4:10    In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

The Scope for Humble Obedience is Complete.

~ Romans 8:13            . . . for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

~ Romans 13:14           But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.

Humility demonstrates Service.

Humility yields Positive Service.

~ I Peter 4:9    Be hospitable to one another without complaint.

Humility yields Blameless Service.

~ Romans 16:19           For the report of your obedience has reached to all; therefore I am rejoicing over you, but I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil.

Humility yields Faithful Service.

~ II Timothy 3:16-17  All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

~ I Corinthians 15:58              Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.
