Sermon Outline, July 17, 2016, “Jesus is Greater than Darkness”
Jesus is Greater than Darkness
I John 2:3-17
~ Isaiah 9:2 “The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them.”
~ John 8:12 “Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.’”
~ Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
Walk in Truth.
God reveals Truth.
~ Titus 1:2 “. . . in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago . . .”
~ Hebrews 6:18 “. . . so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.”
~ John 18:37 “Therefore Pilate said to Him, ‘So You are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.’”
~ John 10:35 “If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken) . . .”
~ John 17:17 “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.”
Truth overcomes Falsehood.
~ John 8:32 “. . . and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
~ Ephesians 4:25 “Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.”
Walk in Obedience.
God reveals Commandments.
~ I Peter 1:14 “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance . . .”
Obedience overcomes Disobedience.
~ Revelation 21:8 “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
~ Psalm 1 “How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so, But they are like chaff which the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the wicked will perish.”
Walk in Love.
God reveals Love.
~ John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
~ Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Love overcomes Hate.
~ I John 4:7 “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.”
