He is Risen!
I love Easter! Why do I love Easter? I love it because our family always gets together at Easter, but that is not the main reason. We usually have a really good crowd at church, but that is not the main reason either. Why do I love Easter? I love Easter because on that Sunday we highlight and celebrate the truth of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead! Actually, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead EVERY SUNDAY! That is right! EVERY SUNDAY we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead!
On Easter Sunday this year, our Scripture is Romans 8:31-39. Wow! What a text! Romans 8:1 starts out very strong with the proclamation, “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” Then, the chapter just keeps building and building until it peaks with a powerful statement about the love of God! Verses 38-39 provide a list of things that shall not separate us from the love of God. The very first thing mentioned in verse 38 is that death shall not separate us from the love of God.
Certainly, death does not separate us from God. To the contrary, death brings us right into the presence of our Lord. What is the truth that II Corinthians 5:6 & 8 declares? To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord! So, death really becomes a blessing for the Christian!
How is it that death becomes such a blessing for the Christian? Because of Jesus Christ! I Corinthians 15:55 asks, “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” I Corinthians 15:56-57 answer, “The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The very first holiday to come following my Dad’s passing was Easter! The first holidays following a loved one’s death are the most difficult. That Easter was difficult, but the truth of Easter assures me that my Dad is with the Lord because of the truth of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Every Sunday, when we are singing, I always think of my Dad because he loved to sing hymns and spiritual songs. I am comforted and strengthened to know that he is singing in the presence of our Lord! And one day, because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, our family will see Dad again and join him in praising our Lord!
