Giving Grace

There are so many great songs written about the grace of God. The songs “Amazing Grace”, “Your Grace is Enough”, and “Your Grace Finds Me” are just a few from a long list of songs written about God’s great grace for us. Why are so many songs written on this topic? Because the grace God has shown us through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus provides forgiveness of our sins and the gift of eternal life! What greater thing is there to sing about?

Sin is a big problem. So big that it affects, well, 100% of people. Romans 3:23 says “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. This sin problem affects you and me both. Thankfully God has given us what we need and not what we deserve because of our sin. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”. What our sin has earned us is death. Death is what we deserve, it’s what we have earned. But instead God gives us what we NEED. That is, forgiveness through Jesus and eternal life with God. Because of this, many define God’s grace as “God’s unmerited favor”. I think this is a great definition. God, thankfully, gives us what we need and not what we deserve.

Sometimes we have trouble showing the same grace to others that God has shown to us. Sometimes we are even unwilling to accept grace ourselves. We would rather live in our guilt and shame than let God or anyone else show us grace. Maybe the reason we have a hard time accepting grace is because we are unwilling to show grace to others. Let an understanding of God’s grace sink into your heart in the next several days and weeks. The book of Romans has some great insight on Sin and Grace. That would be a great text to read. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in showing His grace to the people around you. What an Amazing Grace to share!
