Some Things Never Change
Judges chapters 4-5, we have the Israelites who have been under severe oppression for 20 years. The enemy of Israel had 900 chariots and outnumbered the men of Israel. After the successful leadership of Joshua, Israel selected judges to lead the military to defend the people. However, after the leadership of Joshua, leadership seemed to diminish and enemies began to rise. In chapter 4, the men of Israel shrank back in fear of the enemy, not trusting in God for deliverance. No man was willing to step up to the plate to get the job done in leadership. So, Deborah, a woman, stepped up to the plate, assumed the leadership role, and got the job done.
Let me be very clear. I am not sexist by any means, nor do I believe that women have no business in leadership positions. According to scripture, yes, women have restrictions in roles of leadership but the problem isn’t so much in female leadership as much as it is in male passiveness. Like Deborah, women in our culture, churches, and families have to step up to the plate because “men”, “fathers”, and “daddies” have not. Churches desperately need real men, families desperately need fathers, and kids desperately need their daddy to step up to the calling Jesus has placed on their lives.
Can you believe there was not a single man in all of Israel willing to face the enemy in battle and trust the Lord? Not one! Men of Tates Creek Christian Church, let us not be like the men of Israel. Let us be men who answer to the calling Jesus has placed on our lives and in our hearts. To love our wives as Christ loved the church, to not spare the rod and curse the child, to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, to be in the world but not of the world, to not have a hint of sexual immorality among you, to love Jesus in all things, to read scripture, and to pray.
